Like millions of other young men, Jack was plunged into a war which was to change his life, and the lives of his loved ones, forever. While his brothers left Britain to fight in France and Belgium on The Western Front, Jack’s war would take him to Salonica (Thessaloniki), in Greece.
This book paints a picture of the world as seen by Jack’s wife, Grace, who tells the harrowing story of what happened to the men and the families they left behind. It traces their lives from the time of Jack and Grace’s marriage in 1912, until Grace’s death in 1957.
This is a true story based on the lives of the author’s great grandparents, Jack and Grace Cogbill.

I learned a great deal about WW1 as experienced by people in the Brittish perspective. A wonderful, if sad, personal family story.Product details

A Soldier Like Jack edition by Clare Cogbill Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Set against the background of the first world war this is a story also about love and about the bonds between family. The story tells about the many hardships, not just of the soldiers, but of their loved ones back home and does so in such a warm and honest way that it's easy to be drawn into their world. I found I cared about the characters but also it was a very thought provoking read and made me consider my own ancestors and the turbulent lives of the ordinary people living through those eventful times. I really enjoyed this book and although there is sadness it is ultimately uplifting. It made me think and left me wanting to do some family research of my own! Would definitely recommend.
This is a true story based on the life of the author's great- grandparents during the war. It is a reminder of the devastating effect that war can have both on the soldier and the family at home. The book is written with sensitivity and the accurate historical knowledge makes it a book that will appeal to a wide range of readers. It is an inspiration to anyone interested in tracing their own family history especially at a time when there is a danger that these memories will be lost forever.
It can be read as a good story but it is far more than that. For those of us who have not lived through a war and have not had to see our young sons go to battle it is a education and a reminder that we have been lucky and we should not forget the past. I would thoroughly recommend this book.
